Atlantic City is ‘far, far from dead.’ That was the takeaway from the two-day East Coast Gaming Conference at Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center this week, as keynote speaker New Jersey Senate President Jim Sweeney sought to reassure attendees that the city would endure.

New Jersey State Senator Jim Sweeney, who spoke at this week’s East Coast Gaming Conference, is optimistic about Atlantic City’s chances of a rebound, despite a history of financial turmoil.

Despite the political turmoil and financial disarray that have besieged the resort town in recent months, ‘the best for Atlantic City is in front of us,’ he insisted.

The beachfront city has been on the verge of bankruptcy, but on May 26, the New Jersey legislature passed a bill that will loan AC $75 million, giving it five months to get its finances in order. Failing that, the state could still take over.

A separate bill, passed the same day, will allow casinos to make payments in lieu of taxes, allowing them to budget known payment amounts rather than deal with fluctuating property values. Both bills are now sitting on Governor Chris Christie’s desk, awaiting sign-off.

Casinos Resurgent

Casino revenues have remained steady throughout this period of upheaval, and operating profits for the first quarter are up on last year. Which could be signs that despite its alarming bank balance, the city is ready for a rebound.

The local casino industry had a terrible 2014, with four of its 12 casinos closing, but this is the very reason for its resurgence, Sweeney said. Rather than being over saturated, as before, the market is now ‘right-sized’ he claimed.

He also cited the proposed expansion of gambling beyond Atlantic City and into North Jersey, a motion that would help the city recoup revenue lost to neighboring states like Pennsylvania, which have regulated casino in recent times.

If approved, Atlantic City would receive up to $20 million a year from taxes on the new casinos in the north, as compensation for ending its 40-year monopoly. The issue is due to go to a public vote in November, and remains highly controversial, with strong opinions for and against.

‘When we came up with legislation to expand gaming, it was to ensure Atlantic City would benefit and have the funding to diversify its economy,’ Sweeney said.

Operators Cross Swords Over Northern Expansion

The New Jersey casino expansion issue was a hotly debated issue at https://myfreepokies.com the conference, and Resorts Hotel CEO and President Mark Giannantonio made it clear he did not share Sweeney’s enthusiasm for the idea. He claimed that his company would soon be publishing a study showing that expansion would impact the city severely, and that it could lose three to five more casinos as a result.

New Meadowlands Racetrack CEO Jeff Gural, who has teamed up with the Hard Rock International on a North Jersey casino proposal, called Giannantonio’s assertion ‘crazy.’ He added that Atlantic City operators should be delighted with the compensation package, which would go to city coffers, rather than the casinos directly.

‘To get to your casino, you have to drive through a slum. You need it more than anybody,’ he snapped.

The somewhat abysmal surrounding areas of the casinos in Atlantic City have long been a thorn in the gambling resort’s side.

New Responsible Gambling Trust Research Highlights Possible Social Cost of FOBTs

FOBT’s: Ethnic minorities are five time more likely to have a problem than whites, says study. (Image: sbcnews.co.uk)

The UK’s controversial fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) took a pummeling this week from research commissioned by the betting industry-funded Responsible Gambling Trust (RGT).

The machines allow betting shop customers to wager up to £100 ($157) every 20 seconds on fixed odds games, usually roulette, and their proliferation throughout Britain has invited endless media comparisons with crack cocaine.

The research found that problem gamblers, ethnic minorities and the unemployed were more likely to bet max, on the machines, adding fuel to the theory that FOBTs target the vulnerable, and are creating social problems and an increase in crime.

The study also found that rates of problem gambling are slightly higher among people who live near ‘clusters’ of bookmakers shops, ie, within 500 yards of three or more shops, than those who don’t. Twenty-eight percent of participants who lived in clustered areas were problem gamblers compared with 22 percent of those who had fewer bookmakers in the area.

Chasing Losses

The research used a sample size of around 5,000 customers of bookmaking shops, but it noted that since all respondents were loyalty card holders, they were already ‘highly engaged’ gamblers and therefore more disposed to problem gambling and could not be said to represent the general population.

While £100 bets represented just 0.26 percent of all FOBT bets, their occurrences tended to increase toward the end of a session, as the size of stakes increase as bettors chased their losses.

The chances of being a problem gambler are five times higher if you’re a member of an ethnic minority group than if you are White/White British, the study found. And meanwhile, unemployed people are twice as likely to be problem gamblers as the gainfully employed.

RGT Answers Critics

RGT, which is the UK’s leading gambling charity, has been criticized for failing to address the issue of the addictiveness of FOBTs in its research. It has also been accused, as an industry-funded organization, of failing to ask the really tough questions of the betting industry, although the research published this week would appear to vindicate it on that charge.

‘This research poses some challenging questions for the bookmaking industry, for regulators and for ministers, on the effect of clustering and the maximum stakes on FOBTs in particular,’ said Marc Etches, chief executive of the RGT.

‘The Responsible Gambling Trust’s focus is not just about funding treatment, it’s about preventing the harm and misery caused by problem gambling. Today’s findings show promising development in the potential to identify risky patterns of play on gaming machines and, therefore, design more effective intervention methods in the future.’

Poker in Nevada Stays Stagnant but Reports Remain Encouraging

Nevada poker profits remain stagnant, but small details reveal some potentially positive news for the state. (Image: Caesars.com)

Poker in Nevada remained virtually static between 2015 and 2016 according to the latest revenue report by the state’s Gaming Control Board.

Reporting on the period for April 2016, the Nevada Gaming Control Board stated that its network of live and online poker tables generated a total of $8.57 million in revenue.

Players in Nevada have the option to ante-up at 647 live poker tables as well as a selection of online games at WSOP.com and Real Gaming; which is slightly less than the number available in 2015.

Fewer Tables, Greater Profits

However, despite the number of live tables dropping down from 652, revenue in the state was up by 0.86 percent compared to April 2015. By most measures this would suggest that Nevada’s poker economy is doing no better and no worse than it was last year.

However, with fewer tables on offer, it does suggest that players are wagering slightly more than they have before.

Naturally, with the World Series of Poker (WSOP) set to get underway on May 31, the state’s poker rooms are preparing for a busy summer. Traditionally the WSOP pushes revenue to record highs and there’s every chance things will be the same this year.

In fact, with WSOP.com streamlining the online registration process and offering another bracelet event this year, there’s likely to be a spike in traffic online as well as live.

Swings for Casino and Sports Betting

Elsewhere in the Nevada gambling world, casino revenue fell while sports betting hit record levels. Following a year-on-year decline in March 2016, Nevada’s casino suffered another drop in casino revenue in April.

Running the numbers, the Nevada Gaming Control Board found that April 2016′s $876 million takings were 24 percent lower than the same period in 2015. Fortunately, strong performances by the state’s sportsbooks helped stem the flow of any leaks on the casino gaming floor.

The start of the baseball season, coupled with continued interest in basketball, meant that sports books handled $292 million in April. The net result of this record level of betting was a $13.5 million win for sportsbooks which represents a 70 percent increase same period last year.

As is the case with poker revenue, increased tourism and the presence of the WSOP over the coming weeks should drive up revenue even further as gamblers fly in from the four corner of the globe ready for a summer of excess.

The NFL and Gambling: 26 of 32 Teams Play Within One-Hour Drive of a Casino

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell opposes sports betting, but half of his league’s 32 teams play their home games within 11 miles of a casino. (Image: sportingnews.com)

The NFL’s relationship with the gambling industry has been about as cordial as a Redskins and Cowboys game, and the league’s disgust for casinos and sports betting has been on full display in recent months after Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed interest in moving the franchise to Las Vegas.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has correctly stated that the decision to approve the Raiders to Sin City would ultimately be up to the league’s owners, but the NFL itself continues to oppose any form of gambling that could potentially jeopardize the integrity of the game.

American Gaming Association (AGA) President Geoff Freeman responded to Goodell in late April by saying, ‘Nothing threatens the integrity of sports more than a thriving and opaque sports betting black market.’

The AGA doubled down on revealing what it believes to be hypocrisy on the part of the NFL by exposing the fact that more than 80 percent of teams currently play their home games within an hour’s drive of a casino.

‘Concerns about athletes playing games in Las Vegas are dramatically misinformed. It’s time for a fresh look at the sports betting prohibition that is pushing widely popular sports betting activity to an illegal market that threatens the integrity of the sports we love,’ Freeman pronounced.

Watch a Game, Play a Game

NFL brass have opined for years that allowing a team to play in Las Vegas would lead to an influx in sports betting and could seduce players into either gambling on their games or entering illegal agreements with criminals.

Sports betting is currently only offered at Nevada casinos. The state received immunity from the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) when it was passed in 1992 due to the state’s already legalized sportsbooks.

Though casinos outside of the Silver State are prohibited from offering odds on sports, the AGA highlighted on May 25 that 16 of the NFL’s 32 teams play within 11 miles of a casino. For a league so opposed to gambling, it is quite ironic that so many stadiums are neighbored by gambling facilities.

As Casino.org reported, sports betting revenue hit record levels in April by generating $292 million in handles for a $13.5 million win for sportsbooks.

Tide Changing

The NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL, the Big Four of the United States, have all traditionally opposed sports betting, but that has quickly changed when it comes to the National Basketball Association.

NBA Commission Adam Silver, who is embarking on just his third year as boss of basketball, has freely expressed his stance that sportsbooks on the NBA should be legal and regulated.

During a recent conversation with ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter,’ Silver said that his job is to ‘protect the integrity of the game,’ but ‘if you don’t have an open exchange you can’t know.’

‘I think it should be legal. . . It should be transparent,’ Silver stated.

Goodell and the NFL have embraced daily fantasy sports (DFS), which came as a surprise to many. Some 40 states now have some form of gambling, and New Jersey remains diligent in fighting to end sports betting prohibition in its state.

Trump is estimated to be worth $3 to $10 billion, depending on who’s counting, and the New York businessman has largely self-funded his primary campaign. But now that he’s the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2016 presidential election, his costs are likely to rise exponentially, and he’s no longer averse to taking in donations.

Las Vegas Sands Chairman and billionaire Sheldon Adelson is backing GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump for this November’s presidential election against presumed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Perhaps the most pivotal Republican financier is Adelson, the Las Vegas Sands owner who is worth some $30 billion.

Adelson has no qualms about opening up his personal vault to fund conservative candidates, either. During the 2012 presidential cycle, Sheldon and his wife Miriam shelled out upwards of $100 million through personal donations and political action committees to GOP runners.

Late last week, Adelson lent his official support to Trump.

Speaking at a World Values Network event in New York City, a Jewish organization whose mission is to promote Jewish culture in politics and media, Adelson reportedly got behind the GOP nominee. According to The New York Times, the casino tycoon said of Trump, ‘I’m a Republican, he’s a Republican. He’s our nominee.’

Little Memory of Little Marco

Adelson has largely remained quiet throughout the primary process, a development that has surprised many in the political arena. Though he isn’t outspoken in the same way Trump has been and has no Twitter account, the 82-year-old lets his money do the talking.

Speculation varies as to why he’s been sitting on the sidelines as the 17 Republican Party candidates duked it out. One theory could that Sheldon preferred Florida Senator Marco Rubio, while Miriam wanted to support Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Pundits believed Rubio’s apparent willingness to be molded by donors found favorability in Sheldon’s eyes, not to mention the Floridian’s support of Adelson’s RAWA anti-online gambling measure.

Adelson is unequivocal when it comes to a potential president being pro-Israel. The Venetian and Palazzo owner wants his candidate to share in keeping the American ally and Middle East democracy safe.

While Trump danced around the issue at times and said he’d be ‘neutral’ on the Israel and Palestine conflict, Adelson says he now believes the GOP frontrunner would be ‘good for Israel’ should he become president.

A Billion Here and There

With this November’s election shaping up to be Trump versus Democrat Hillary Clinton, the political heavyweights are finally going public with their endorsements. Trump has a long road ahead in uniting the Republican Party, but he’s off to a strong start when it comes to the GOP’s long list of so-called ‘one percenters.’

Billionaire Carl Icahn has been friends with Trump for decades and has publicly expressed his support, and New York City grocery store owner John Catsimatidis has stated he believes Trump can get Republicans to rally around him.

The Donald has also made plenty of enemies along the way, of course. The Bush family says it will not support Trump, the Koch brothers are staying mum, and Paul Singer has donated to anti-Trump efforts.

But when it comes to the casino industry, the Republican bigwigs are betting on the favorite. In addition to Adelson and Icahn, Steve Wynn will vote Trump.

And love him or hate him, it’s also worth noting that Dan Bilzerian will likely occasionally use his Instagram account over the next seven months to push Trump support. In December, Bilzerian posted, ‘In an age of . . . political correctness, you have to respect the people who remain unfiltered @realDonaldTrump.’

It takes one to know one. Bilzerian has been noted as being somewhat unfiltered himself on an occasion or twenty.

TVG Makes Hash of Kentucky Derby

Nyquist wins Kentucky Derby, but it was more like Demolition Derby down at TVG. (Image: foxbusiness.com)

Betting handle on Saturday’s Kentucky Derby was the second highest in the race’s history. Some $192.6 million passed through the bookie’s hands, just short of the record set in 2015 when American Pharaoh took his first step on the road to Triple Crown glory.

But a significant portion of that money apparently failed to end up in the hands of US licensed betting site Television Gaming Network (TVG), which mysteriously flat-lined about an hour before the race began and stayed that way for its duration.

Yes, while eventual winner Nyquist was limbering up, or whatever it is horses do an hour before a race, thousands of the account-wagering site’s customers were excluded from participating in US horseracing’s biggest betting day of the year.

DDoS Not to Blame

It bore the hallmarks of a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS), in which cyber criminals overload a website’s bandwidth with traffic from multiple sources, rendering it temporarily non-operational in order to extort money.

Online gambling sites are prime targets, because criminals know they can target them during specific events, like the Kentucky Derby, when customer interaction is guaranteed to be high.

The truth, https://myfreepokies.com/siberian-storm/ according to Betfair-operated TVG, is more prosaic, or so it claims. In a press release issued Monday, the company apologized to its customers and said that ‘human error’ was to blame for a system error that was introduced during at the final moment.

In short, someone blundered, big time.

TVG Apology

‘At TVG, we know how important it is to provide a great experience to our wagering account holders, not only on the first Saturday in May, but every day,’ said the statement. ‘Today, plain and simple, we let many of you down, and we’re sorry.

‘We build our products to handle enormous amounts of volume and have committed significant time and resources to accommodate a growing customer base. This year in particular, we took unprecedented measures to ensure a great experience for our customers. Regretfully, due to human error, we introduced today’s problem during a final readiness check. This won’t happen again.’

Early figures suggest that betting revenue was down just one percent on last year, and without the TVG crash this year’s derby would have been a record breaker, although it did include one more race than in 2015.

TVG’s loss was Churchill Downs gain, however. The racetrack, which operates the TwinSpires.com betting site, said total handle was up 29 percent on last year, to $26.8 million, of which $16.6 million was taken through its online arm. That’s up 22 percent from online bets handled in 2015.

That means whoever spilt their Frappuccino on the server at TVG made a multi-million dollar mistake.

Amaya Online Poker Platform Full Tilt Reaches End of the Road on May 17

Full Tilt Poker, once a kingpin of the American online poker scene during the game’s Internet heyday, will soon be fading into history.

End of an era: the once-glorious Full Tilt Poker software client will be retired next week by owner Amaya when the platform’s traffic is officially merged with PokerStars. (Image: Fulltilt.com)

As of Tuesday, May 17, 2016, the Full Tilt poker platform will cease to exist, as site owner Amaya merges its traffic with PokerStars, and retires the controversial poker client for good.

News of the site migration and consolidation was confirmed in a press release this week by Michael Josem, head of public relations at PokerStars and Full Tilt.

‘In coming days, Full Tilt players will be emailed direct and personal information on how this will affect them specifically, which depends on a variety of factors including their jurisdiction and the status of their PokerStars account (if any),’ Josem said.

‘In many cases, Full Tilt players who already hold a PokerStars account will not need to update any information or transfer their account assets (loyalty points, cash balances etc) which will be transferred automatically to their PokerStars account and they can simply log in to their PokerStars account…’

End of an Era

While the Full Tilt brand will continue, it will operate merely as a skin of PokerStars. It’s an unremarkable end for a once-mighty and once uber-popular platform. It all came crashing to its knees after the financial mismanagement of its previous owners brought the DOJ to its virtual doors in 2011, which were then summarily slammed shut.

After that, the love affair soured as quickly as an acrimonious divorce.

Full Tilt was rescued from the ashes of Black Friday by the Rational Group in 2012. As part of the purchase deal, it was agreed that Rational would subsequently repay money owed by Full Tilt to its non-US customers.

It was all part of an attempt to curry favor with US authorities, as Rational sought to atone for its own violation of UIGEA. And it was also a savvy move, because the acquisition of Full Tilt meant that no competitor would ever get its hands on the software platform, which at the time, was widely considered the best.

Meanwhile, Rational acquired the massive and all-important email addresses of the site’s enormous (if then somewhat fired up) customer base.

You Can’t Go Home Again

Initially, Rational relaunched Full Tilt in a similar vein as before, as the ‘home of high-stakes,’ with sponsored pros Gus Hansen and Tom Dwan offering continuity with its previous incarnation. But the site never quite recovered from its withdrawal from the tainted US market and its scarred image after poker’s Black Friday.

And when Amaya acquired the Rational Group’s assets in 2014, the brand was low on its list of priorities. As the once-popular site’s traffic dwindled, so did its importance in the eyes of the new Canadian owners. Any attempts to revive the fortunes of this former nosebleed battleground by reinventing it as a site for recreational players failed to make much impact.

Rafi Ashkenazi, chief executive of PokerStars and Full Tilt, said in February that the merging of traffic would make the company ‘more nimble,’ allowing for it to focus technology on one platform as opposed to two. He said that would help it ‘innovate more quickly and enter newly regulating and existing markets swiftly.’

There are also expected to be job losses at the company’s Dublin, Ireland headquarters.

Meanwhile, now five years past Black Friday, some of the mess created by the original Full Tilt still lingers. The Garden City Group (GCC), the financial claims administrator charged by the Department of Justice with overseeing the repayment process to Full Tilt’s American victims, said this week that 1,500 claims, or around half of those yet to be processed, have been denied.

These claims are believed to relate to affiliates of Full Tilt, as well as those who dispute the balance accepted by GCG. Those in the group whose claims have been denied have just ten days to file an appeal, the account administrator said.

Bernie Sanders Goes After Casino Industry and Donald Trump While Campaigning in Atlantic City

Warranted or not, Bernie Sanders took swings at Donald Trump and Carl Icahn on Monday for leading Atlantic City into destitute times. (Image: Jewel Samad/Getty Images)

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (D) paid a visit to Atlantic City on Monday while campaigning in New Jersey, and the Vermont senator had few good things to say about the seaside town.

Speaking at Boardwalk Hall, Sanders told his supporters that Atlantic City is the epitome of American greed.

‘What we’re seeing in Atlantic City, New Jersey, capsulizes the ugliness and the greed that we’re seeing all over this country,’ Sanders declared.

Sanders unsurprisingly went after the presumptive Republican Party nominee Donald Trump for his casino businesses. The billionaire operated as many as four resorts from 1984 through 2009 before filing for bankruptcy and abandoning the gambling mecca.

‘The greed and the recklessness that we have seen from people like Donald Trump and Carl Icahn, oh you know Donald Trump? You don’t think he was a brilliant successful businessman who can bring the time of prosperity to America that he has brought here to Atlantic City?’ Sanders posed to a roomful of boos.

Sanders is facing a monumental uphill battle against Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. The former first lady and secretary of state has a substantial lead in the delegate count and is the heavy favorite to win the party’s nomination.

On Monday night, Sanders reconfirmed to Stephen Colbert that he has no plans to exit the race anytime soon. ‘At the end of the day, I hope and believe we’re going to win this,’ Sanders said.

A groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the old Moulin Rouge casino, off the Strip at 900 Bonanza Road in Las Vegas, was held earlier this week, as new developers seeking to transform the stricken remains of the iconic building to its former glory gathered round.

The Moulin Rouge back in its short heyday in 1955, when can-can dancers lit up the stage. The current owner says that work to rebuild the iconic landmark property could begin within weeks.

It’s not the first time that the Moulin Rouge has broken new ground, however. While the casino itself was open for just six months, declaring itself bankrupt in November 1955, its brief existence had a lasting impact on civil rights and racial politics in Las Vegas and beyond.

Built by two white businessman, real-estate baron Alexander Bisno and New York restaurateur Louis Rubin, with investment from the great African-American boxer Joe Louis, ‘the Rouge,’ as it was known, was the first-ever racially integrated casino resort.

End of Segregation

Las Vegas, through the 1950s was heavily segregated. Blacks were barred from the casinos on the Strip, unless they were entertainers. Even then, they were treated as second-class citizens.

Legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sammy Davis Jr. were required to come and go by the vendors entrance or though the casino kitchens, and were forced to stay at boarding houses in the black area of town, across the railroad tracks.

When Davis, in a moment of rebellion, decided to take a dip in the pool at the New Frontier, the management immediately drained it.

The Rouge flung open its doors exactly 61 years prior to Tuesday’s ceremony. A 60-foot white neon ‘Moulin Rouge’ sign blazed across the top of the building, while inside, it was all wood panels and chandeliers and Toulouse-Lautrec-style murals of French can-can dancers.

Both black and white talent graced the stage during the property’s short life, with only the best of both, from Duke Ellington to George Burns and from Count Basie to Judy Garland.

Fire Damage

A mere six months later, it lay shuttered, but its existence inspired the movement to desegregate the Strip. That came about in 1960, following a meeting between city and state officials, hotel owners, and local black leaders, held fittingly at the Moulin Rouge itself.

There have been various attempts to restore the building over the years, but until now, none have gotten off the ground. The structure has been largely destroyed by various fires, which prompted city officials to declare it a safety hazard and to demolish what remained of the original building in 2010.

The current owner, Moulin Rouge Holdings, will spend $100 million on rebuilding the casino, and said Tuesday that construction could begin within the next few weeks, to be completed in 2019.

‘We are hoping and wishing and praying that this hotel will be the heartbeat of the community,’ said China Hudson, spokesperson for Moulin Rouge Holdings. ‘We want people to come here, feel here, party, have a great time. This won’t just be a casino.’

Las Vegas Sands and Madison Square Garden Partner on New Off-Strip Concert Venue

Las Vegas Sands and the Madison Square Garden Company (MSG) announced on May 25 that the two companies are uniting to construct a ‘first-of-its-kind’ 400,000-square-foot entertainment and concert venue that will be the world’s largest facility built specifically for touring acts.

The now-completed and opened T-Mobile Arena will have some perhaps not-so-friendly competition from another concert venue being planned off the Strip by Las Vegas Sands and the Madison Square Garden Company. (Image: lasvegassun.com)

According to a jointly issued press release, the arena ‘will feature a unique seating design that places all 17,500 seats in front of the stage and, with a scalable seating capacity, will present a wide variety of shows.’

The building will be constructed where Sands Avenue and Manhattan Street intersect in Las Vegas, a block behind LVS’ Venetian and Palazzo casino resorts, as well as the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

‘At a time when significant conversations are taking place about the city’s future tourism needs, a state-of-the-art venue designed, built and exclusively dedicated to bringing the world’s greatest musical and entertainment acts to Las Vegas is the type of development we should all be excited about,’ Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson was quoted in the presser.

Having Stadium Power

The movers and shakers in Las Vegas have made no https://myfreepokies.com/red-stag-casino/ secret about their beliefs that a vital component to the future of Sin City is entertainment, possibly even greater in weight than casinos themselves. The fact of the matter is that gambling revenues have seemingly flat-lined on the Strip, with annual revenues hovering between $6 and $6.5 billion over the last five years.

Meanwhile, non-gaming revenues have progressively increased and now represent a larger percentage of Las Vegas’ overall economy.

Utilizing data supplied by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, industry analyst Bank of America Merrill Lynch says non-gaming accounted for about 43 percent of Strip revenues in 1990, while gaming was responsible for roughly 57 percent back then. In 2012, non-gaming accounted for almost 65 percent of the economy in the gambling capital of the United States.

Adelson and MSG aren’t alone in rushing to build spectacular facilities to attract the biggest stars in entertainment. The $375 million, 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena, half-owned by MGM Resorts, opened last month next to the New York-New York Casino and has already hosted monster acts, including the legendary Billy Joel.

Critics of Atlantic City believe the East Coast gambling resort city hasn’t properly adjusted to the changing gambling market. Commercial gambling was once largely confined to Nevada and Atlantic City, but today, 18 states have commercialized gambling.

Billionaire’s Backyard Playground

The as-yet-unnamed Sands and MSG venue will be built directly across the street from Steve Wynn’s golf course, which the billionaire is planning to remove to make way for a 38-acre manmade lake and water park.

A two-mile walk south from the Sands Ave and Manhattan Street site, and you’ve arrived at the proposed location of the $1.4 billion, 65,000-seat domed NFL stadium, the potential home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

It’s theoretical that a Las Vegas tourist could attend a Raiders game at noon, walk to the Sands MSG venue for an evening concert, and then cap off the night in the water park, all without ever stepping foot in a casino. And that could be a harbinger of things to come in Sin City.

Online Poker Won’t Be Banned Nationwide, as Anti-Gambling Bill 2.0 Fails

The online poker industry has received its fair share of criticism from some US lawmakers, mostly Republicans. One of those politicians, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), tried some sneaky business to impress Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson.

Another attempt to ban online poker nationwide, a move that would keep naysayer Sheldon Adelson happy, has failed. (Image: Jerome Favre/Bloomberg/ Getty)

While Graham was running for president this past year, Adelson, one of the biggest GOP donors, expressed his support for the South Carolina congressman.

In return, after Graham dropped out of the race due to receiving hardly any support, he threw Adelson, who has been on an anti-gambling crusade for years, a bone.

The senator snuck some anti-gambling language into a federal spending bill, which certainly made the casino mogul happy. In the bill, if passed the way Graham worded it, online gambling would be banned nationwide.

Not So Fast, My Friend

Despite his attempt to pull a fast one on his fellow members of Congress, Graham was unsuccessful. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) removed the online gambling ban language from the bill, and that was the end of it.

‘We win. RAWA loses. Thank you for taking action to defeat this effort,’ a pro-online poker organization, Poker Players Alliance (PPA), said in a statement.

The Restoration of America’s Wire Act (RAWA) was a bill supported by Adelson that would have banned online gambling in America. But, after many attempts and a boatload of money thrown at it, it never passed.

The language Graham inserted in the federal spending bill was similar to RAWA. Like RAWA, this attempt to make online gambling illegal throughout the United States was an epic failure.

Adelson, the man who owns two of Las Vegas’ most luxurious hotel casinos ( the Venetian and its sister property, Palazzo), as well as Nevada’s largest news source (the Las Vegas Review-Journal) is 82-years old and worth billions of dollars, but absolutely refuses to give up his fight to make it illegal to gamble online. He’s been doing this for years and no one expects him to quit until the day he dies.

Supporting The Donald

Donald Trump has now received enough delegates (1239, two more than are required) to claim the GOP nomination for America’s next president. After taking his time to fully endorse any candidate, Adelson recently announced his backing of The Donald.

The online gambling antagonist has thrown around millions of dollars over the years to Republican candidates. He works tirelessly to influence a candidate’s decisions, and that could well include the fight to ban online gambling.

A Trump endorsement from Adelson doesn’t necessarily mean it will soon become illegal to gamble on the Internet. In fact, the likelihood of RAWA or any similar bill passing, based on a few years of evidence at this point, is slim to none. But Adelson will most certainly, at the very least, attempt to influence Trump’s decisions, should the business tycoon get elected.

Casino Games Over NBA Games

Carroll is certainly not Kyle Lowry or DeMar DeRozan, the team’s scoring superstars, but the small forward has become an integral part of the Raptors’ overall success in the postseason. Joseph comes off the bench to relieve Lowry.

None of the Raptors played well Wednesday, the score making that more than evident, but Carroll and Joseph were exceptionally bad.

Carroll went 2-7 from the field including 0-4 from behind the three-point line. He scored a total of five points in 27 minutes of playing time.

Joseph went 1-5 from the field and 0-3 from the arc for three points in 10 minutes.

Casey didn’t credit Carroll and Joseph’s late-night antics for their poor play.

‘This isn’t why we lost,’ Casey stated. ‘This is the NBA, they’re grown men. . . This has nothing to do with a curfew.’

Game six between the Cavs and Raptors is Friday night at 8:30 pm ET.

Warriors on Brink

It seemed unfathomable before the playoffs started to think that the Golden State Warriors wouldn’t at least reach the NBA Finals for the second consecutive year. During the 2015-2016 regular season, the defending champs accomplished what was previously thought to be unachievable by breaking the Chicago Bulls’ 72-win mark.

Sportsbooks in Vegas had the Warriors heavily favored to repeat as NBA champs, but tonight they face elimination. The Oklahoma City Thunder have shocked the league by going up three games to one on MVP Steph Curry’s squad.

Once considered almost a sure thing for the Finals, the Warriors now sit at odds of 4/1 to win the title. Cleveland leads the way at 11/10, with the Thunder at 3/2.

Toronto is listed at 150/1, as oddsmakers apparently believe last night’s beating will lead to the Raptors’ extinction.

Perhaps Carroll and Joseph will hit up Vegas Thursday to place a wager on those odds.

Baazov on Trial: Amaya CEO pleads not guilty to fraud charges and has vowed to contest them vigorously.

David Baazov, Chairman, and CEO of Amaya Inc has pleaded not guilty to five counts of securities fraud, according to the Quebec Regulator, Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF).

The AMF filed penal proceedings against Baazov in March following a 15-month investigation into the suspicious trading of Amaya’s stock in the lead-up to the announcement of its $4.9 billion acquisition of PokerStars and other Oldford Group assets.

https://myfreepokies.com

Charges against Baazov included ‘aiding with trades while in possession of privileged information, influencing or attempting to influence the market price of the securities of Amaya Inc, and communicating privileged information.’

AMF spokesman Sylvain Theberge said that Baazov, along with his co-accused, had formally submitted their pleas in writing in the past couple of weeks. The case will now be sent to Quebec court for the setting of trial dates and selection of a judge.

Co-Accused Enter Not Guilty Pleas

Baazov stands accused with two other individuals Amaya, Yoel Altman and Benjamin Ahdoot, and three companies, Diocles Capital Inc., Sababa Consulting Inc. and 2374879 Ontario Inc. All parties have pleaded not guilty, said the AMF.

Ahdoot is Amaya’s VP of government projects and a childhood friend of Baazov’s. Together, they formed a tech company in the nineties which got into trouble for failing to pay copying levies for the audio discs it had sold in contravention of copyright law.

Altman, meanwhile, is a chartered accountant who has been described as a ‘long-time strategic adviser,’ to Baazov.

The AMF recently said that the charges relate to incidents have occurred between 2011 and 2016, which means that at least some of the alleged insider trading and stock manipulation predates the Oldford acquisition significantly.

Baazov Faces Five Years

The regulator also announced that 13 more individuals are suspected of enriching themselves while trading in possession of privileged information, or leaking such information. Many of these individuals include members of Baazov’s close circle of business partners, family and friends.

The defendants face fines of $5,000 to $5 million per charge and up to five years in prison if convicted, Theberge said.

Baazov, who had been preparing a bid to take the company private at the time he was formally charged, announced at the end of March that he would be taking paid leave so he could address the case against him.

‘I believe that stepping down in the short term will help to avoid distraction for the company and its management while I vigorously contest all allegations made against me and pursue my bid to acquire the company,’ he said.

Atlantic City Casinos Post Highest Operating Profits Since 2010, But Bottom Line Remains Dicey

It looked so promising: Atlantic City casinos averaged a 17.2 percent gross operating profit across the city’s eight remaining gambling resorts, the highest number since 2010 and a 29 percent increase over 2014.

But before you go buying stock in any of the New Jersey gaming resort’s gambling operators, be aware that gauging a business’s financial performance according to operating profit alone is a flawed methodology, according to most economists.

Atlantic City casinos posted stronger gains for their operating profits in 2015, but the region remains engulfed in fiscal turmoil. Mayor Don Guardian, at the podium, is at odds with State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, behind to his right, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. (Image: Aristide Economopoulos/NJ Advance Media)

That’s because gross operating profit isn’t the net bottom line or income, but rather what’s left of the remaining money after a business carries out its day-to-day responsibilities like payroll, supplies, and marketing. The net per se doesn’t factor in a resort’s overall debt load, local and state income taxes due, or any ongoing expenses.

Though operating profit shouldn’t be solely used in determining whether a business, or in this case region, is turning a corner and approaching better days, it’s still a useful scale in generating economic forecasts.

Any sort of meaningful profit is certainly a welcomed sign of revitalization in an area where revenues have been decidedly dilapidated over the last decade.

The Union Gap

Atlantic City casinos benefit from a rather friendly 9.25 effective tax rate on winnings, but powerful unions are thought to be hampering bottom lines.

‘The thing that hurts Atlantic City from a margin standpoint are the costs, because the unions are pretty powerful,’ Macquarie Securities SVP Equity Analyst Chad Beynon told The Press of Atlantic City.

The New Jersey gambling metropolis has become the target of a hostile war between Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian (R) and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R). The governor and State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-District 3) want the state to assume control of the town’s finances, but Guardian and State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-District 32) oppose that direction, as it would give Trenton the power to renegotiate union contracts.

‘It’s beyond belief that this thing has gone on this long. . . If you’ve seen what’s going on in Atlantic City, I would say it’s comical but it’s tragic,’ Sweeney told nj.com on Monday. ‘Atlantic City is not willing to help itself.’

On Thursday, Prieto is expected to have the Assembly vote on a measure that would block Christie’s Atlantic City takeover in favor of giving the troubled town two years to clean up its act.

Prieto and Guardian’s ongoing fight against allowing the state to assume control while simultaneously dancing along the lines of bankruptcy could backfire for the speaker.

‘There’s going to be serious consequences if the city goes bankrupt,’ a source told NJ.com.

A City Underwater

Atlantic City is underwater not only fiscally, but also, apparently, literally.

According to a recent report published in National Geographic, the city’s cash-strapped public service utilities, paired with ongoing global warming, could lead to a devastating natural disaster in the coming years.

Though Atlantic City’s boardwalk resorts are on high enough ground, the impoverished surrounding communities are in immediate danger of catastrophic flooding.

Climate Central sea level expert Benjamin Strauss says Atlantic City is a barrier island that has extremely low and flat terrain. Strauss explained that a four-foot water surge would inundate roughly 50 percent of Atlantic City dwellings, while the same surge in Boston would only impact seven percent of residents.

Melting polar ice caps and warmer temperatures are slowly expanding the ocean and its total water mass, effectively growing the threat to coastal communities around the world.

Atlantic City is bracing for a two-front perfect storm of sorts, it seems.

Kentucky Derby 2016: Does Anyone Care After Historic 2015?

Over 18 million people watched live and on television as American Pharoah crossed the finish line at the Kentucky Derby last year, and it appears the historic run has renewed interest in the sport. (Image: sportingnews.com)

The Kentucky Derby opens its gates on Saturday for the 142nd running of America’s most bet-upon horse race. The first leg of the Triple Crown in the US, the Kentucky Derby welcomes more attendees than any other Thoroughbred race in the country and is dubbed ‘The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports’ for its short 1.25-mile length distance.

Horseracing remains a popular sport throughout America, but tracks are struggling to keep their doors open, the historic Atlantic City racecourse the latest notable fatality to join East Boston’s Suffolk Downs and California’s Hollywood Park.

The annual race first held in 1875 kicks off the three-leg paramount series, but following American Pharoah’s historic 2015 run, there are warranted concerns over whether populous intrigue will return to Churchill Downs. American Pharoah won last year’s Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes in becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

Ticket Prices Rise

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness have historically attracted adequate interest as fans watch to see who will win the first leg and then whether the same horse can continue its Triple Crown hopes in Maryland. When a horse doesn’t win the first two legs, the Belmont Stakes often suffers.

Some analysts theorized that Pharoah’s accomplishments could carry over to the Derby and diminish interest as the Triple Crown had now been experienced in every fan’s lifetime.

Surprisingly, it’s just the opposite as ticket prices are soaring according to SeatGeek.com.

The online ticket marketplace is reporting that resale prices are averaging $571, 2.5 percent higher compared to 2015. Tickets for the upper grandstand will cost you $902 each, a 14 percent premium compared to 12 months ago.

Where’s the Smart Money?

As of Thursday, there are 22 horses entered for Saturday’s marquee race.

Nyquist, a two-year-old undefeated colt is currently the heavy favorite at odds of 3-1. His next closest challenger is Exaggerator (8-1), a three-year-old colt that is coming off a win at the Santa Anita Derby in early May.

Though 22 horses will be lining up, 15 of them have odds of 15-1 or worse. Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has two horses in the race, Destin (15-1) and Outwork (15-1), says Nyquist deserves more respect.

‘Everyone has to be careful to call this a wide-open race,’ the decorated trainer told Daily Racing Form. ‘In fairness to Nyquist, he’s undefeated, taken his show on the road, and won at multiple distances. . . Based on what I’ve seen, he’s still a little underrated.’

Pletcher won the Derby in 2010 and also has two Belmont Stakes victories to his resume.

2015 By the Numbers

More than 170,000 attended the Kentucky Derby last year to witness American Pharoah capture the first leg of his eventual Triple Crown. The race set an all-time record for total money wagered with $137.9 million on the Derby and $194.3 million for the day’s races.

Some 17.9 million television viewers tuned in as Pharoah crossed the finish line according to Nielsen.

It’s a tall task to repeat, but odds are aligning in the Kentucky Derby’s favor.

Detroit Casinos Represent Substantial Chunk of Michigan City’s Overall Revenue

Detroit casinos played an integral role in the revitalization of the formerly bankrupt Michigan city by generating 16 percent of the total local revenue in 2015.

Three Detroit casinos accounted for 16 percent of the city’s total revenue last year, but at what cost? That depends who you ask. (Image: hgbinc.com)

The MGM Grand, MotorCity Casino Hotel, and Greektown Casino-Hotel represented the lion’s share of the state’s $2.8 billion gambling industry last year, with the three casinos responsible for contributing $174.3 million in tax payments to Detroit.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) is on a cross-country 40-state tour to hype how gaming positively impacts state and local jurisdictions. AGA President Geoff Freeman was in Detroit on Wednesday to pinpoint how casino companies are leading the way in turning the city around.

Hosted by the MGM Grand and attended by US Representative Brenda Lawrence (R-Michigan) along with members of the aforementioned casinos, the meeting was an exercise in self-love, with praise and adulation exchanged among the attendees.

‘Detroit’s three casinos have been partners in the community’s campaign to get this great city back on the right track,’ Rep. Lawrence said. ‘We’ve seen their commitment to Detroit . . . The greatest impact can be realized in jobs offered in a wide range of careers providing a path to the middle class for the residents of Detroit, as well as their mission-based philanthropic efforts.’

Not Everyone’s in the Deal

The City of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on July 18, 2013, citing upwards of $20 billion in debt, the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in the history of the United States by nearly five times.

Michigan appointed Kevyn Orr as emergency manager of the city, and 17 months later, Detroit announced it had emerged from bankruptcy on December 10, 2014. Orr’s goals were fulfilled and he resigned, and Detroit was once again back in the hands of its elected leaders.

While Orr made sure the city was solvent and able to pay its bills, that isn’t the case for a vast demographic of the region’s residents. Many feel that the casinos are providing an economic boost to the city’s government by preying on at-risk, lower socio-economic level locals.

‘People in Detroit are already struggling as it is,’ resident Laura Eggleson told CBS Detroit’s Sandra McNeill this week. ‘I just don’t see how they helped us as a community.’

McNeill’s news radio program takes her throughout the city to gauge opinions on Detroit from the people who know it best. In testing the casino waters, McNeill said the majority seemed to be torn on the issue legal casinos, due to gambling addiction.
