Gary Neville: Manchester United evolution more important than Premier League finish

Gary Neville considers Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s development ought to be more important than their Premier League finish this season.

“There is a sense they gone backwards and just spent #60m to #70m net. There’s a sense they need to have purchased another center and another central midfielder because the midfield is feeble.
“I applaud what Manchester United’ve completed this summer in a sense since they’ve made big mistakes. I have been critical of them paying on the best for players, they’ve reacted to other teams looking like their signing players and panic purchased. They’ve got to stop that, so there needs to be a strategy and a plan – there hasn’t been at the club for the previous seven years.
“What it seems like today is that they’ve gone back to a way of signing emerging British gamers, bringing academy players through and identifying international talent. Currently at time, the average age of United has come down to 24, you will find just eight academy players from the squad, but there is a sense of several Manchester United fans that this isn’t great enough and that expectations have been reduced.
“I really think United have taken a step backwards but a step in the right direction to go forwards because enough is enough of all these 30-year-old players arriving, not suiting the style. They’ve got to stop that because it’s not worked for the club.
“What I am saying is they’ve changed direction. Whether you like it or that I enjoy, it is a change of direction. At Harry Maguire Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they’ve got younger players that have got a future at Manchester United for the next 10 years. The three of them have begun.
“There’s a feeling that Manchester United have got young players are they good enough are they not? I look at the young players from the team against Leicester and there is Wan-Bissaka, Perreira, McTominay, both James and Rashford. I say to myself are they? At this period in time, no. They have still got to prove themselves. All of them look promising and they are currently functioning at their maximum in each and every match.
“Top four and winning a trophy would be a prosperous season. That’s where Manchester United are at. That is unacceptable in terms of where United must be, but they’re incapable – following seven or six years – of going into first from sixth, seventh or fifth. They’re nowhere near that at this minute in time.
“They are going to have to get three or four good transfer windows. The most crucial thing in the last window n’t only added two or three players of the sort, it had been making sure they didn’t create any errors. I don’t think they have done . I think Man Utd this year will be more powerful with Fellaini, Herrera and Lukaku, but they won’t be because these players will never get Man Utd where they have to be.
“Obviously, Man Utd have to acquire the Premier League name. That has to be the barometer and should not alter, but you can not go to winning the league out of not enjoying the team with ordinary soccer. There’s a measure in the center of getting better soccer, liking them and the team you can begin moving upward.
“There were clear instances. Everyone at the club might see that he was on the perfect path, although jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, he attained League success without a prize. Frank [Lampard] and Ole need to convince their plank and fans they are on the perfect track.
“I think being on the right track this season is much more important than fifth, fourth or thirdparty. People must begin enjoying the group again.”
